I suppose a box of chocolates is somewhat how I view villa rentals. Wrapped up in shiny marketing brochures and alluring websites, you never really know if you’re going to like them until you sample. And you can be sure of this:

The vast majority fall short.

Does a marketing brochure show you the unsightly construction work in your line of vision? Does it capture the real size of the swimming pool, most of which are doubled in size with the trick of a wide-angle lens?

Are you well informed as to the orientation? For example, certain villa terraces on the Amalfi Coast are overcast in shade by 3:30 pm.

Do you get a full overview of the usable internal floor area? Let’s be honest: a four-bedroom villa of only 2,500 – 3,000 sq ft definitely won’t make the grade.

How about the faint hum of traffic from a nearby road you knew nothing about?

Does a website contextualise location? Or the exact street and neighbouring properties? Do you get a real sense of the staff and how long they’ve been a team? The quality of beds and linens?

No, I thought not. And why is that? Well, it’s because most people don’t have a clue what, or to whom, they’re selling.

They don’t know how vast the spectrum of “luxury” really is and how to distinguish. Everything is “great”, “stunning”, “one of the best”. Except is it? Really?

You definitely don’t want to rip that shiny wrapper off and find a dud chocolate underneath.
