Crossing the Ponte 25 de Abril from Lisbon, sailing boats bob along the Tagus estuary in the direction of the Atlantic Ocean.

Under a golden September glow, the water glitters and everything around it is vibrant and sun-hued. Cutting across the Setubal Peninsula, we wind our way down to Comporta, on the northwest coast of the Alentejo region. An area likened to the Hamptons, though we prefer to avoid such comparisons.

We find ourselves surrounded by evergreen umbrella pines with voluminous crowns and needle-like leaves. You’d never know that within this quiet, rural setting with its gentle lull of endless trees and “tranquilidade” are some of Portugal’s most upscale private homes.

Alexandra Champalimaud, Jacques Grange and Philippe Starck have kept homes here for many years. Ditto Christian Louboutin, who also owns a residence in the neighbouring village of Melides where George Clooney has reportedly invested.

Names-dropping would feel out of place if we were writing about glamorous St Tropez, Mykonos or parts of southern Italy. But sleepy, unassuming Comporta seems worlds away from the jet-set. It’s the ultimate insider enclave where most socialising happens behind the closed doors of private homes.

There’s a smattering of beach restaurants overlooking a Caribbean-esque sea where the vibe feels slightly more clubby. But here, you’ll find absolutely nothing remotely pretentious or showy. Fisherman’s hut-meets-Boho is where it’s at. Cork trees and stone pines, huge rice paddies, the wetlands of the Sado estuary, undulating sand dunes and the shimmering turquoise sea beyond.

Discreetly tucked away behind the estuary, Comporta Village offers a selection of highly accomplished local restaurants and lifestyle boutiques.
